Tüm kadim mitolojiler gibi, Yunan Mitolojisi de Yaratılış Efsanesi[1] ile başlamakta olup, evren ve tüm olayların başlangıcını, yaşamın köklerini, dünyanın nasıl başladığını ve insanların ilk olarak nasıl yaşamaya başladığını açıklayan hikayedir. Eski Yunanlılar için bu öykü, en temel varoluş sorununa verdikleri cevaptır. Yunan şairi Hesiod’un[2] Theogony[3] adlı destansı şiirine göre ilk oluşum yani evrenin başlangıcı belirsizlik, sonsuz boşluk veya düzensizlik anlamına gelen kaosdu[4]. Kaos, herhangi bir formu veya amacı olmadan vardı ve tüm karmaşa içinde boşluk, kütle ve karanlıktan oluşuyordu.

Like all of the ancient mythologies, the Greek Mythology started with the Creation Myth[1]; the story that explains beginning of things, origins of life and how the world began and how people first came to inhabit it. For the ancient Greeks this was their answer to the most fundamental question of existence.
