Gigantes (“toprak doğumlular”), Uranüs ile Kronos arasındaki savaştan doğan devler ırkının adı olup, Gaea ve Tartarus’un (Protogenoi) oğullarıydı. Tanrılar evrenin hükümranlığını Titanlardan zorla devraldığında, Gaia intikam için devler ırkını doğurmuştur. Hesiod’un Theogony adlı eserinde Gigantes hakkında detaylı bilgi verilmekte olup, Uranüs’ün kesilen cinsel organlarından çıkan toprağa damlayan kandan oluşan 24 devden oluşmaktaydı. Uranüs, Trakya sınırları içerisinde Phleora’da Cronus tarafından öldürülmüştü. Hesiod, onları parlak zırh ve uzun mızraklar olarak tanımlarken diğer yazarlarca yılan şeklinde vücutları ve boğa ve aslan şeklinde kafaları olan canavarlar olarak tasvir edilmişlerdir. The Gigantes (“the earth-born”) or Giants (Greek mythology) were a race of giants borne out of the battle between Uranus and Kronos. They were the sons of Gaea and Tartarus (Protogenoi).
